Local boys run from bad guys in fun slapstick Published on Sunday, Feb 21, 2010 The Mound Street Tigers are Akron's Bowery Boys. In author Ernest Stadvec's lively slapstick, Boris, Emil, Steve and Arnold are on school vacation sometime around 1940. The group runs afoul of small-time mobster Jimmy the Cheese and his out-to-lunch henchmen Bosco and Usual. Though all the boys want to do is swim and ride their bikes, Jimmy has his own priorities: forcing local shopkeepers to buy his bootleg hooch, vanquishing his nemesis Icepick Pete and putting out a contract on a fox that's been raiding his henhouse. Unfortunately, he has mistaken Boris for the elusive Pete. And the boys, while trying to save the fox from slaughter, are having trouble enough just staying one step ahead of the laughably incompetent hoodlums. Though The Mound Street Tigers could use attention from a copy editor, this old-fashioned tale is appealingly Runyonesque. The 175-page softcover costs $7.95 from Essco, the author's retailer of aviation manuals, 378 S. Van Buren Ave., Barberton, OH 44203. Stadvec is a retired pilot and hosts a TV program on WAOH (Channel 29) in Akron.  Review from The Akron Beacon Journal, http://www.ohio.com/lifestyle/84882322.html?
